A remarkable piece that is 544 Years old and was printed 10 years before Columbus discovered America!!! A pair of authentic early printed Bible leaves from the dawn of the printing press, elegantly presented in a custom folio Offered here are two original leaves from a Latin Vulgate Bible , printed in Venice circa 1482 , during the earliest decades of European printing. These leaves are mounted in a handsome modern presentation folio titled Biblia Sacra – Venice 1482 . The text is set in a fine Gothic (blackletter) type , arranged in double columns , and features hand-applied rubrication in red ink, including paragraph marks and initials—evidence of the traditional finishing process used in early printed books. Visible headings such as “Regum III” (Book of Kings) confirm the biblical content. Feature s Date: c. 1482 Origin: Venice, Italy (early printing center) Text: Latin Vulgate Bible Format: Double-column Gothic type Decoration: Hand rubrication in red, with occasional annotations Material: Handmade rag paper Presentation: Mounted in a custom green cloth folio with gilt title Historical Context: Incunables & Early Printing These leaves date from the incunable period (books printed before 1501), when the revolutionary technology of the movable-type printing press , introduced by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century, was transforming Europe. Venice quickly became one of the most important centers of printing, producing large numbers of Bibles and scholarly works. Early printed books like this still closely resemble manuscripts: Text printed in dense Gothic type Spaces left for hand-added decoration Rubrication (red lettering) applied by hand after printing These hybrid features reflect a fascinating moment when medieval manuscript traditions met emerging print technology . What Are “Incunables”? While the term incunable refers specifically to books printed before 1501 , the decades immediately following are often called the post-incunable period (early 16th century). During this time: Printing became more standardized and widespread Typefaces began shifting toward more readable Roman styles Hand rubrication gradually declined as printers incorporated color and decoration directly into the presswork Your leaves come from the earlier incunable phase , when books still retained strong manuscript influences—making them especially desirable to collectors. Condition Leaves show expected age-related toning and wear Some edge wear, small losses, and staining , consistent with 15th-century paper Rubrication remains clear and vibrant Mounted securely within a modern protective folio Dimensions: Weight - 812g Height - 36.3cm Width - 27.7cm Thickness - 1.8cm
