Description

1741 Baron de Pollnitz Memoirs Vol 2 French Travel Courts Leather. A Londres, chez Jean Nourse, 1741. The title page is printed in red and black and dated 1741. The binding shows honest age and use, with rubbing and scuffing to the boards, wear to the corners, rubbing at the joints, a larger rubbed/chipped area at the lower front board, and losses at the head and especially the foot of the spine. Tome second. A Londres, chez Jean Nourse, 1741. An appealing 18th-century French-language memoir and travel volume by the German adventurer and courtier Baron de Pollnitz, known for his observations on European courts, personalities, and political life. This listing is for Tome second only, not a complete set. Small-format volume, 6.5 x 4 x 1.5 inches, bound in contemporary full leather with a richly gilt spine and spine labels. The title page is printed in red and black and dated 1741. The binding shows honest age and use, with rubbing and scuffing to the boards, wear to the corners, rubbing at the joints, a larger rubbed/chipped area at the lower front board, and losses at the head and especially the foot of the spine. Even with this wear, the book still has strong shelf presence, especially from the spine. Internally, the title page is present with old ink ownership/date marks, the opening text leaf with decorative headpiece is shown in the photos, and the final table/terminal FIN leaf is visible. There is expected age toning, light staining, and general handling wear through the text block, but the interior appears generally sound and readable. I have not fully collated the volume leaf by leaf, though it appears to retain its title and terminal matter. An attractive original 1741 London-printed Pollnitz volume for collectors of French memoirs, travel literature, European court history, and decorative 18th-century leather books.
