The Big Unit, came up with another XXXL performance Friday night to keep the Mariners alive in the American League Division Series. Relying more on finesse than force, displaying more precision than power, the 6-foot-10 left-hander gutted his way through seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits to lead Seattle to a 7-4 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 3 in the Kingdome. The Mariners made economic use of seven hits, including a two-run home run and RBI single by first baseman Tino Martinez, to pull to within 2-1 of the Yankees in the best-of-five series, which resumes Saturday when Seattle's Chris Bosio faces New York's Scoot Kamieniecki in Game 4. Johnson struck out 10, including Yankee first baseman Don Mattingly three times, the last on three pitches with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth and Seattle clinging toa 2-1 lead. It was only the sixth time in Mattingly's 14-year career that he has struck out three times in a game. 'Big Unit' has biggest game Facing elimination in Game 3 of the 1995 American League Division Series, the Mariners returned to the Kingdome for their first postseason home game in club history and sent their ace — Randy Johnson — to the mound, looking to extend their season. Johnson had just completed a dominant 1995 regular season in which he went 18–2 while leading the American League in ERA (2.48) and strikeouts (294) on his way to his first career Cy Young Award and a 6th-place finish in AL MVP voting. The left-hander was also tabbed as the starting pitcher for the American League at the 1995 All-Star Game at The Ballpark in Arlington. The Big Unit made his postseason debut in Game 3, working on just three days rest after pitching the Mariners into the playoffs by tossing a complete game in the AL West Tiebreaker against the Angels.
