Description
1996 MONTBLANC A. DUMAS (SON'S SIGNATURE) WRITERS EDITION FOUNTAIN PEN MINT. This particular pen represents one of the most sought-after variations within the Writers Series—the elusive “son’s signature” version. Early in production, Montblanc mistakenly engraved a small number of pens with the signature of Alexandre Dumas son's signature rather than his father, Alexandre Dumas signature. For your consideration, we are pleased to offer this exceptional 1996 Montblanc Writers Series Alexandre Dumas Fountain Pen, Limited Edition No. 9054 of 20,000, presented in pristine, Never Inked condition and fitted with an 18K Medium nib. This example is complete with its original Montblanc presentation boxes and accompanying literature, as issued. This particular pen represents one of the most sought-after variations within the Writers Series—the elusive “son’s signature” version. Early in production, Montblanc mistakenly engraved a small number of pens with the signature of Alexandre Dumas son's signature rather than his father, Alexandre Dumas signature. Upon discovering the error, Montblanc halted production and corrected the engraving, recalling unsold examples. However, a limited number had already entered the market, making these early signature variants notably scarce and highly desirable among collectors. Celebrating one of the 19th century’s most influential literary figures, Alexandre Dumas is renowned for his mastery of dramatic storytelling, vivid characterization, and enduring works such as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. Montblanc’s design pays tribute to his legacy with thoughtful details, including a sword-shaped clip symbolizing the Musketeers and a cap ring adorned with the fleur-de-lis, reflecting French heritage. The pen itself is beautifully proportioned, featuring a larger nib profile comparable to the iconic Montblanc 149, a distinction shared only with select Writers Series editions such as the Hemingway. The 18K rhodium-plated nib is engraved with a fleur-de-lis motif and marked “4810, 18K/750, Montblanc, 1996.” It is configured as a Medium point, measuring approximately .83mm with digital calipers. In keeping with its preserved status, the nib remains untouched by ink. Condition is outstanding throughout. The cap and barrel are flawless, free from cracks, nicks, or repairs, with a deep, lustrous finish. The gold-plated trim is crisp and radiant, recently polished to highlight its brilliance. The cap threads securely, ensuring a proper, tight fit. The pen measures approximately 5 3/8 inches capped, 6 3/8 inches posted, and weighs 1.26 ounces, offering a balanced and substantial writing experience. The piston filling system has been carefully serviced, flushed, and lightly lubricated to ensure smooth, reliable operation, having been tested with water only. Accompanying the pen are its original Montblanc presentation box, International Service Certificate, reply card, and Limited Edition booklet, completing the full collector’s set. Examples of the Alexandre Dumas Writers Series featuring the incorrect son’s signature are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly in never-inked, mint condition. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a historically intriguing and visually striking Montblanc—an exceptional addition for the discerning collector and a standout piece within any Writers Series collection.
