Onoto Watanna was the pen name of Chinese-American Winnifred Eaton (1875-1954); a gifted writer at an early age, she published many novels, contributed to the Saturday Evening Post, wrote plays, and screenplays. Japanese Nightingale, her second novel, was an immediate success, being adapted into a Broadway play and in 1919 as a movie. Yeto, born in Japan, studied in the United States with Robert Blum and John Twatchman at the Art Students League in New York. He followed Twatchman to the Cos Cob art colony in Greenwish, CN and spent several summers there. He is considered one of the prime proponents of Japonisme in the US. A Japanese Nightingale and Yeto were featured by the Delaware Art Museum in their exhibit: Japonisme and American Book Design (2019).
