Description

The product is a first edition early print of "A Light in the Attic" by Shel Silverstein, published in 1981 by HarperCollins. This hardcover book is signed by the author and includes a very rare sketch and personalized message to the previous owner. It falls under the genres of juvenile fiction and nonfiction, featuring humorous stories and poetry. The book is intended for young audiences and measures 9.2 inches in length, 7.1 inches in width, and 1 inch in height, with a weight of 22.7 ounces. With a total of 176 pages, this vintage book is a unique collectible for fans of Shel Silverstein's work. This is an extremely rare and valuable find! Signed books from Shel Silverstein are a rarity in itself , but having a hand drawn sketch and message by Uncle Shelby are priceless. Mr. Silverstein passed away from a heart attack on May 10, 1999, at the age of 68. He was a talented artist, writer, and musician, winning a Grammy in 1970 for his song “A Boy Named Sue,” which was famously performed by his longtime friend Johnny Cash. He was also nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his song “I’m Checking Out.” Shel also won another Grammy in 1984 for Best Recording for Children (Where the Sidewalk Ends LP). But undoubtedly, one of his greatest achievements was a result of this book, A Light in the Attic. This book was written and dedicated to Shel’s daughter, Shoshanna Hastings, who died of a cerebral aneurysm at the young age of 11. It became his most important and influential work of his entire life. This book lingered on the New York Times Bestselling List for over 2 years straight! This is a feat that some of the biggest authors in modern literature have yet to achieve, including Michael Crichton, John Grisham, and even Stephen King! So this book is a monumental piece. If you look at previous sales of signed and sketched books, they are nearing the 5-figure mark. And those same books are now being relisted for several times the price they were purchased for. I’m talking $20k-$30k for these books!! So this book is not only a unique collectible, but it has quickly become an amazing investment opportunity. I’m open to offers, so please get them in quickly, because every one of these books I’ve had my hands on has sold very quickly and I don’t see this one being any different. As far as condition is concerned, this book is by far the best conditioned book I’ve had amongst all of the Silverstein pieces I’ve owned or consigned in the past. The dust jacket has some slight yellowing, but minimal at best, and has no damage or tearing at all. The front inside flap has been clipped, but otherwise it’s near mint. The book itself is near mint to mint condition. The front and rear covers are immaculate, with no stains, tears, or marking of any kind. The gold ink fill on the cover and spine are in perfect condition. The spine holding strong, with no signs of the binding separating, and it’s not squashed or listing from one side or another like you see when a book has been laid on its side and then a stack of books has been piled on top, which will eventually result in the spine being crushed. The pages are bright white and the ink is bold and unfaded. I couldn’t find a single mark, tear, or even the slightest crease on any of the pages. This book has been very well loved throughout its nearly 50 years in existence. The only, and I mean only slight imperfection I can find is the extremely minimal fading on the top and bottom of the covers where the dust jacket provides no protection. But I’m being extremely nitpicky even mentioning that. All in all, this is a museum quality piece, it definitely will not disappoint.
