Since C & I published more than 8000 prints not accounting the multiples of forgeries, I will use their description as Precedence of authenticity. The Springfield Museum is the largest holdings of C&I lithographs in the nation. A print of ‘St. Peter’ can be found on their website. This print is referred to as 2007,D64. As described: “ St. Peter standing at center wearing a red gown, blue robe.Proper right hand raised. Book & Keys on chain in left hand. Rooster at lower left corner. St. Peter was one of Jesus’s twelve apostles. A fisherman from Galilee, he is prominently featured in the New Testament as a leader in spreading the Christian faith. In art, he is frequently shown with the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Here he is also shown with a rooster, symbolic of St. Peter’s denial of his association with Christ after the Last Supper.” Additional details: - the ‘upside down ‘ cross represents the manner of which St. Peter was martyred- by crucifixion, but at his request upside down. Why? It is reported he spoke to his executioner the following: “ since I am not worthy of dying like my Savior.” -the opened chain: representing his imprisonment as a disciple of Christ. - the stone and meiter: representing the Succession of Popes beginning with St. Peter and the phrase ,by Christ, “ upon this rock I will build my church.” Further characteristics of this piece: - ‘Wide Margins’ : historic evidence from existing periods indicate the wide margins were the original print, then cut down when put into frames with little to no margins. This can be further verified by the practice of noting the measurements on the edges to be trimmed. Condition: Fair. This print is 165 yrs. Old. In writers opinion , the colors are sharp and distinct with little wear. Surface damage ( water) is apparent both to the print and frame. This piece was found in the attic of an antique dealer, without heat/ cooling, and open air ventilation. I will be glad to provide additional photo’s upon request.
