This race is unique because it marked the first time an American manufacturer won at Le Mans, ending Ferrari's dominance. The 1966 race is also known for its controversial finish, as Ford orchestrated a staged photo finish with all three cars crossing the line together. However, due to technicalities in the regulations, McLaren and Amon in the #7 were declared the winners over Ken Miles and Denny Hulme in the #1 GT40, despite crossing the line together. This win was a monumental moment in motorsport history. Ford GT40 Facts The Ford GT40 was a high-performance endurance racing car. Developed in 1963, it was designed to take on the dominant Ferrari racing team at the 24 hours of Le Mans. It's among the few cars to have won the prestigious race four times in a row, 1966 to 1969! The GT40's success was due in large part to its innovative design. The car was much lower and more aerodynamic than anything else on the track which provided a serious advantage over the competition. Built on a lightweight aluminum chassis and powered by a 7.0-liter V8 engine that produced a top speed of 205 mph. The model has all these amazing features: * Professionally hand painted in dark blue * Fabric seatbelts * Working Suspension * Removable Wheels and Tires * Incredible interior and exterior detailing * Opening doors, removable cowling * Real rubber tires on rolling wheels * Limited Edition * Acme box with very cool graphics, always great for displaying.
