American Institute 1882 Award Medal Engraved To Henry Mitchell For Silk Goods. On the reverse it has a wreath and at the open end of the wreath it reads AWARDED TO and engraved in the field, it reads, HENRY MITCHELL - FOR - SILK GOODS - 1882. (20,214 DRC)(TES). I have for sale an 1882 bronze medal awarded by the American Institute. The American Institute of New York City was a civic organization that existed from 1838 to 1980's and awarded medals of recognition to inventors, scientists and agriculturalists in gold, silver and bronze. This medal is 2 3/8 diameter and in uncirculated condition. The medal obverse at the top rim reads AMERICAN INSTITUTE and at the bottom rim NEW YORK. In the center it shows Columbia seated with a spinning wheel, cornucopia, fasces of wheat and an eagle around her and she is holding a staff with a liberty cap in one hand, holding out a wreath to a ship on the horizon in the other hand. On the reverse it has a wreath and at the open end of the wreath it reads AWARDED TO and engraved in the field, it reads, HENRY MITCHELL - FOR - SILK GOODS - 1882.
