RARE, Extraordinary Antique Victorian, EAPG Glass Compote made by the Portland Glass Co. of Maine. Portland Glass Co. was in business from 1863-1873 and this piece dates to about 1865. That's right this compote is around 155 years old, and a real treasure from the Victorian era collector. The design on this compote is extremely rare "Psyche and Cupid". Based on the story written in the 2nd century AD by Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis. The tale concerns the overcoming of obstacles to the love between Psyche, "Soul" or "Breath of Life" and Cupid and their ultimate union in a sacred marriage. There is much written and many paintings done by the "Masters" on the topic of the Cupid and Psyche. The image on this piece depicts a semi nude woman brushing her hair while Cupid is holding a mirror for her to admire herself. A beautiful and timeless Victorian style to be sure. Wonderful addition to any collection or home decor and would make a cherished gift and keepsake. Measurements: abt. 4 1/4" T X 6 1/2" Diameter Across top of bowl X 3 1/2" Diameter across base/foot X abt. 1 3/4" T pedestal from base to bowl bottom. Condition: Excellent.
