Beautiful antique octagonal glass door knob with a soft lavender tint caused by natural sun exposure over time. Originally clear, many early glass door knobs were made using manganese as a clarifying agent in the glass. After decades of exposure to ultraviolet light, the manganese reacts and slowly turns the glass a pale purple or amethyst color. Collectors refer to this phenomenon as “sun purple glass” or “amethyst glass.” The color change happens gradually and cannot be artificially replicated in the same way, making these pieces especially appealing to collectors of antique hardware and glass. This knob features a classic octagonal cut crystal design and retains its original brass shank with set screw, typical of door hardware produced in the late Victorian / early 20th century period (approximately 1890–1915). The lavender tone is subtle but visible, particularly when light passes through the glass, giving the knob a warm antique character.
