VERY RARE FIND ! line images measured in centimeters ! In the mid-19th century, it was common and well-regarded to display one's wealth through extravagant jewelry. However, not everyone who wanted to show off was actually rich. Gold has always been one of the most expensive precious metals, and lavish jewelry pieces could be quite costly. Therefore, a way had to be found to create voluminous gold jewelry that was somewhat more affordable. MORE APPEARANCE THAN REALITY In the mid-19th century, a method was developed where thin negative molds were used to press gold sheets into hollow forms. Often, the backside was sealed with another sheet of gold. This technique resulted in very voluminous jewelry pieces, but they were noticeably lightweight. To conceal this, most of the jewelry pieces were filled with a type of filler or similar material, so that the hollowness would not be so obvious. These pieces of jewelry made from "schaumgold" were particularly common in Biedermeier jewelry. The origin of this type of jewelry can be explained as follows: HOW WAS SCHAUMGOLD CREATED? After the Napoleonic Wars, finances were tight, and precious metals were scarce. Goldsmiths came up with a solution to revive their business and provide their clients with magnificent jewelry. They used "schaumgold" for this purpose. This method saved a significant amount of material, and the filling provided the necessary stability to the jewelry, making it look high-quality. Please note that "schaumgold" is a German term, and its literal translation is "foam gold" or "gold foam."
