Description
Reverse Painted Brooch with Miniature Country Scene- Circa 1840 Finely painted brooch, dating from about 1830 - 1850. Although my aunt acquired this in London many years ago, the history suggests that it is French. The miniature scene is painted on the reverse of glass - the brush strokes are tiny, but visible under magnification. We see an idealized country scene with a rustic gazebo and arched stone bridge over a little steam. There are two figures: a girl in a bonnet and pink dress, and a man in the distance near a lake. The brooch is 2" x 1 1/2", with a gilded metal frame and c-clasp. As you can see, the paint has separated from the glass at the edges, as is common in these antique hand painted pieces. All parts of the brooch appear to be original. Due the delicacy of the painting, it is more suited for display than wearing - think of it as a tiny piece of art.
