Description

Hand-colored Antique Bird Prints of Englishman Edward Lear Many consider Edward Lear one of the greatest avian artists ever, and that includes us. In 1830, when he was just 18, Lear began a project of painting, then creating himself superb large prints of all the world’s parrots. Lear was able to paint many of his parrots from life as some aristocrats then kept aviaries, with parrots among the favorites. Thus some of Lear’s best work captures not merely the correct appearance of a species but the individual personality of a particular bird. Lear also taught him-self to do black and white lithography; and early on, he was hired by John Gould to contribute paintings and plate preparation for several of Gould’s early series, not-able The Birds of Europe (1832-1837) and A monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans (1833-1835). Sadly, Lear got out only a single issue of his would-be grand work on all the world’s parrots, this due to financial problems as well as Lear’s deteriorating eyesight. All larger bird prints created by Edward Lear are scarce, much sought, and ever rising in cost. And yes, this is the same Edward Lear famous for his so-called ‘nonsense rhymes.’ Lear created paintings of parrots for volumes organized by Sir William Jardine of Scotland. Lear’s parrots, here in a quite small format, retain the accuracy and superb line of Lear’s much larger parrot masterpieces. The 4 small volumes of Illustrations of Ornithology were published by Jardine 1826-1843, with sketched monotone backgrounds for Lear’s parrots added by Jardine. Parrot print Lear did for works of Sir William Jardine Here of an adult Blue-winged Parrot of Tasmania and other parts of Australia. Labeled Print 27, it’s in excellent condition, ca. 4 ¼” w x 6 ¾” tall. $40
