He arrived in Roseburg around 1892 from New York, opened his first meat market on Cass Street, and later expanded. By 1906, he had a shop in what became the historic Kohlhagen Building (still standing downtown). He ran the "Economy Market" and was involved in livestock, real estate, and other ventures. His brother Louis was also part of the family meat business. These tins were common in the early-to-mid 20th century for packaging rendered lard (a staple before widespread vegetable shortening). "Kettle rendered" refers to the traditional cooking method in large kettles. Similar family-related lard tins from the Kohlhagens (including Louis) have surfaced in Oregon historical groups, often dated to the early 1900s–1930s.
