Our Perspective: Released in 1917, the Cartier Tank was inspired by the silhouette of WWI Renault tanks, translating rigid military form into one of the most elegant watch designs ever created. Its rectangular case, elongated brancards, and understated dial have made it a design icon for over a century. The Tank Louis Cartier, named after its creator, remains the purest expression of the original vision, maintaining the timeless proportions and classical aesthetic that defined the earliest models. This particular model, the ref. 78086, dates to the 1970s, a period that saw a creative resurgence for Cartier with the then-new Louis Cartier watch collection: a series of 12 iconic models, all presented in large and small versions (minus the baignoire). Crafted in yellow gold and powered by a manual-wind caliber 78-1 movement, this watch features the sought-after Mark 2 dial with a pointy “A”, no secret signature, and Swiss at 6 o'clock. Condition Report: Very Good vintage condition. Watch has been previously polished. Case shows signs of moderate use including scratches and indentations. Dial is in well-preserved original condition with minimal signs of wear and hard to see marks above 6 o'clock. Crystal shows minor scratches and wear. Replacement Must de Cartier black lizard strap shows moderate to heavy signs of wear. Its case retains a polished yet visible hallmark under crown and a seemingly unpolished caseback with personal engraving. Watch is currently running at +/- 0 s/d when tested in one position. Condition Grade: 8.25/ 10
