There is some light shelf wear to the edges and minor bumping to the top of the spine. The jacket has not been price-clipped , showing the original ‘£1.00 net’ price tag to the front flap. It is now housed in a protective brodart sleeve. The jacket shows signs of a previous sticker removal mark to the lower section of the spine, indicating that the book may be an ex.library copy. The original hardback boards are black cloth covered with titles in gold gilt to the spine. They are in very good condition, with minor shelf wear to the extremities and some bumping to the top edge. The spine is straight and the binding is tight. Internally, the pages are clean with some age toning and spot fixing. There are no previous owner’s marks, inscriptions or annotations. The title page and the rear free endpaper show signs of sticker removals, indicating that the book may be an ex.library copy. Writing for the Ted Hughes Society Journal in 2012, Neil Roberts, Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Sheffield, said: ‘Crow holds a uniquely important place in Hughes oeuvre. It heralds the ambitious second phase of his work, lasting roughly from the late sixties to the late seventies, when he turned from direct engagement with the natural world to unified mythical narratives and sequences. It was his most controversial work: a stylistic experiment which abandoned many of the attractive features of his earlier work, and an ideological challenge to both Christianity and humanism. Hughes wrote Crow, mostly between 1966 and 1969, after a barren period following the death of Sylvia Plath. He looked back on the years of work on Crow as a time of imaginative freedom and creative energy, which he felt that he never subsequently recovered.
