Cultivating Compassion Through Meditation by Brian Redmond Estimated delivery 3-12 business days Format Paperback Condition Brand New Description This "handbook to happiness," is a series of five brief essays on the theme of meditation, and its role in promoting human happiness. It seeks to show that, even though the practice of regular meditation is promoted by various religious bodies, it is not necessarily, or even primarily, a religious exercise. It is what the scientist-turned lama, Mathieu Ricard, terms "mind training." As religious institutions lose their credibility and influence over the general run of modern people, we are still left with the human hope and, and need for, transcendence. Meditation teaches that this transcendence is a point of view, which each human being can choose for themselves. It is a sense of detachment from, and yet involvement with, all that is. It depends on an act of will, and serious intention: mind training. It is not an indulgence in fantasy, but an engagement with one's own humanity in all its frailty yet glory. Author Biography Brian Redmond was born in Liverpool, England, in 1938, just in time to witness some of the devastation of World War II. He became a Conventual Franciscan friar, in the hope of promoting a better world. He was sent to Japan on missionary work, and came to realize that religious truth was not the province of any one institution, but the expression, in many guises, of the universal human need for meaning and hope. He left his Order, married a Japanese woman, and raised two children. Now retired from his work as an English teacher, he continues to seek avenues that would promote human happiness, with support and inspiration from his friend and collaborator, Leon Lessinger. Leon, too, witnessed the traitorous effect of war on the human spirit, when as an Army engineer, he observed the first atomic bomb tests. Retired now from an illustrious career in many roles as a public official in the United States, he voices his thoughts on life in what he modestly calls "Word Paintings," brief poetical inspirations.
