Description
Presenting 67 issues of Downbeat magazine covering 1951-1954. Downbeat in this era presented an encyclopedic well of information on jazz and jazz musicians as well as regular academic and scholarly articles on the subject. Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Stan Kenton, Dave Brubeck, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong were featured among many others. The September 10, 1952 issue features Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Quite a few issues were subject to water, probably in the 1960's (I have family history with these) but ALL are intact, readable and all pages turn properly. I tried to show the type of interior damage in the last picture. Some of the issues are in good condition. During these years, Downbeat, on the outside was presented as a magazine but when opened, was read like a newspaper. Sometime in April of 1955, it transitioned to a completely magazine format. Regular contributors such as Billy Taylor and Steve Allen highlighted the origins, history and development of jazz. Although Downbeat was not exclusively dedicated to jazz, that was its primary focus. Included are: 1951- 4 issues; 1952- 21 issues; 1953- 22 issues; 1954- 20 issues. SERIOUS BUYERS: Please message me if you would like information on specific issues included.
