Filming officially began on October 23, 2017 and concluded in July 2018. Unlike the first six seasons that each had ten episodes and the seventh that had seven episodes, the eighth season only has six episodes. Like the previous season, it largely consists of original content not found in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series and adapts material Martin revealed to the showrunners about the upcoming novels in the series, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. The season was adapted for television by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Upon returning to Winterfell with their armies, Jon and Daenerys learn that the White Walkers have broken through the Wall. In response, the Northern lords and their allies rally around Winterfell, all the while remaining suspicious of Daenerys and the promised Lannister reinforcements. At King's Landing, Euron returns from Essos with the Golden Company and convinces Cersei to have sex with him while Qyburn, acting on Cersei's orders, hires Bronn to kill Tyrion and Jaime. Theon rescues Yara, who sets out to reclaim the Iron Islands, before returning to the North to fight the Army of the Dead. Back at Winterfell, Jon reunites with Bran and Arya and learns to fly Rhaegal with Daenerys's encouragement. Sam, after learning Daenerys executed his father and brother, tells Jon his true identity as Aegon Targaryen. Tormund and Beric, who survived the destruction of the Wall, encounter Edd and several members of the Night's Watch at House Umber's castle, whose occupants have been killed by the Army of the Dead, before finding a message from the Night King. The following morning, Jaime arrives at Winterfell and is recognized by Bran. A White Walker is a fictional, otherworldly humanoid creature from the HBO television series Game of Thrones, and the George R. R. Martin novel series A Song of Ice and Fire on which it is based. Primarily referred to as the Others in the novels, White Walkers are a supernatural threat to mankind who dwell outside fictional Westeros, north of The Wall.[1][2] Dose noted that "in particular, [fans] are eager to learn more about the White Walkers" in Martin's forthcoming novels,[3] and The Verge named them among "the most visually iconic creatures on the show".[4] White Walkers are also featured in the show's merchandising.
