Description

This artwork is an original Georges de Feure color lithograph that was published by L’Estampe Moderne in 1897, and bears the publishers blindstamp on the lower right corner. It is also plate-signed, "DE FEURE", and dated "97". The printing company was Imprimerie Champenois, Paris. The image size is approx 25.5 cm x 33 cm, or 10 in x 13 in. It is in Very Good condition with mild yellowing of paper which is slightly brittle. Entitled “Le Retour”, it perhaps represents a return home, a nostalgic feeling, or a journey back to familiar places. This piece is also sometimes called, “Le Retour du Chevalier”, which refers to the Knight in Shining Armor being greeted by the faithful Greyhound dog. That smile on his Lady’s face tells it all…she gonna be gettin’ some tonight! L'Estampe Moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each of 4 original lithographs, priced at 3 francs 50 centimes and printed by Imprimerie Champenois of Paris. Many accomplished European Art Nouveau painters contributed works to this publication. The richly lithographed prints had as a blindstamp (or embossed device), the imprint of a young woman's profile in the lower right corner. A blind stamp is a colorless, embossed impression made on a print or other material without ink. It can be an image, design, or lettering that creates a depression in the paper. Blind stamps are often used by publishers to identify their work, and can also be used by artists, institutions, or collectors to distinguish their work. They are also sometimes called chop marks. Georges de Feure (1868-1943), whose real name was Georges Joseph van Sluijters, was a French painter, theatrical designer, and industrial art designer associated with the symbolism and Art Nouveau styles. Born in Paris on September 6, 1868, he came from an artistic background—his father was an affluent Dutch architect, and his mother was Belgian. De Feure’s work is highly characteristic of the Symbolist movement, particularly in its focus on feminine themes, including the iconic femme fatale. His artistic endeavors spanned various media, showcasing his versatility and creativity.
