Globe Blue by Yoshifumi Hatakeyama Japanese Ceramic Sculpture Handmade Pottery(0004) Description About This Items This unique ceramic artwork, titled “Chikyu-gi” (Globe), was created by Japanese ceramic artist Yoshifumi Hatakeyama. The piece consists of two separately handcrafted components: the spherical vessel and its pedestal. Each part was individually glazed with different techniques and then carefully assembled in the kiln during the firing process. This rare and intricate method results in a harmonious fusion during firing — creating a single, unified form reminiscent of the Earth itself. A true work of art, this piece reflects the artist’s mastery in both form and glazing. It can be appreciated from any angle and is suitable as a centerpiece or collector’s sculpture. He does not follow conventional techniques of regional styles such as Seto-yaki or Shigaraki-yaki , but instead creates works through his own unique sensibility and methods. Originally a car designer, Hatakeyama made a bold career transition into ceramics. Since then, he has continued to pursue a free and contemporary style of expression that transcends the aesthetics of traditional Wa ( 和 )—the Japanese concept of harmony, natural beauty, and simplicity. His glazes are primarily based on white, and each piece is formed using a custom blend of multiple types of clay. Because the outcome cannot be fully predicted before firing, he conducts repeated tests and firings in pursuit of ideal translucency and natural “flow.” Only a small number of these creations are selected as finished works. Hatakeyama primarily presents his work through solo exhibitions in Tokyo, where he places great importance on the relationship between the piece and the surrounding space. He always stays on-site during his exhibitions to directly communicate the concept and background of each piece with visitors. The central theme of his work is the landscape of nature—especially that of water . Using pale turquoise-blue glazes and subtle red gradations around the rim, he evokes twilight riverbanks and the gentle shimmer of rippling water. His unique technique involves carefully layering glaze up to 60 times. Firing his kiln more than 50 times a year, he continues to pursue the rare moment when a piece captures the serene essence of flowing water. His goal is to create vessels that embody quiet, meditative landscapes of Wa —offering a peaceful connection to nature and moments of calm in the midst of modern urban life.
