Description
As with all items in this collection, this artifact is certified authentic and will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and Provenance , detailing typology, dating, region, and collection history. RING SIZE 10 An authentic Crusader-period bronze heraldic band ring , dating to the 12th–13th century AD. This heavy, wide-band form — with its distinct central ridge and symmetrical flanking panels — is characteristic of martial rings worn by Crusader knights, mounted sergeants, and Templar-affiliated personnel. These bands often served as heraldic identifiers , with ridge divisions reflecting simplified shield partitions or field separations used in non-noble or military-order contexts. The broad, flat face of the ring exhibits faint linear and point-like markings, consistent with medieval use-wear and light engraving that has softened over centuries. The surface carries a deep reddish-brown patina with pale limestone accretion and mineral sheen typical of metalwork excavated in the eastern Mediterranean. Micro-pitting, edge smoothing, and soil retention within the inner hoop all align with authentic Crusader-period archaeological corrosion profiles. Such wide-band rings were popular among Templar and Hospitaller retainers and Crusader knights who preferred durable, easily recognizable forms. Their wide surfaces functioned as signet substitutes, martial identifiers, or simple heraldic badges within the Latin East. This artifact is certified authentic and will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and Provenance detailing typology, dating, and Crusader-period cultural context. Museum Parallel: Cf. Israel Museum, Jerusalem – Crusader Metalwork Series (IMJ Crusader Rings, Cat. nos. 210–224) , which includes wide-band bronze rings with central ridges and flat heraldic fields dated to the 12th–13th c. AD. Academic Reference: Cf. A. Boas, Crusader Archaeology: The Material Culture of the Latin East — for heraldic and martial bronze rings used by Crusader forces and Military Orders. Provenance: From a British private collection formed in the early 2000s; previously part of a UK antiquities dealer’s inventory prior to 2005. Guaranteed authentic ancient artifact. 5-1
