Part of the steering system, the outer tie rod end connects the steering knuckle, on which your front wheel is mounted on one end, to the steering gear mechanism on the other end. As you steer left or right, the steering gear pushes the steering arms and tie rods left or right respectively. Normal wear and tear and hazards like poor road conditions, potholes and accidents can cause damage to tie rod ends. If a tie rod fails, the effects can range from the mild (like premature tire wear) to the extreme (a total loss of control of your vehicle). Be on the lookout for these signs of a failing outer tie rod end: Uneven or premature tire wear Excessive inner or outer tire wear is a sign that there could be something wrong with your tie rods ends. Front end out of alignment A damaged tie rod end can cause the front end to come out of alignment and handle poorly. Vibration or looseness in steering wheel A loose tie rod end can cause vibration or looseness in the steering wheel which can worsen during acceleration or turns. Clunking, grinding or noise under vehicle Abnormal noises like squealing while turning corners or clunking from the front end can be an indication of a damaged tie rod end. Product Description By constantly introducing design enhancements that extend product life and simplify installation and replacement, MOOG has earned its reputation as the chassis industry’s Problem Solver.
