He was the youngest of the three sons of General Bulwer, a prominent member of the English nobility, and his wife, formerly Elizabeth Lytton, whose maiden name he eventually assumed. His father died when he was but two years old, leaving him to the care of his mother, who was a woman of learning and refinement. At an early age he was put under the instruction of a tutor, and while yet a child showed evidences of marked ability both in the acquirement of knowledge and in original-ity of thought. When but seventeen he published a volume of poetry entitled Ismael, an Oriental Tale, with other Poems, which, although immature in conception and expression, pointed to the rise of an author of merit. In 1823 he entered Cambridge University, and while there, attracted attention by his proficiency in the classics and his aptness in the art of verse writing. He won the chancellor's medal offered for the best poem by an undergraduate with his Sculpture in 1825, and the next year published a small volume of poetry called Weeds and Wild Flowers. He was graduated in 1826 with honors.
