DESCRIPTION: Famous Classics Publishing Company (London and New York), published 1898, 204 numbered pages. Copy Number One of a two-hundred-copy limited edition. CONDITION: Poor to Acceptable condition. Pages are clean, unmarked and bright, binding is quite poor. Front board missing, back board is detached. Two black pen marks on one page. THE BOOK: First published in Paris in 1731, banned and controversial. Influenced operas by Massenet and Puccini. INSCRIPTION: Two ownership markings. “LJT- Ellis Island- Jan 11 1919” and “Louis J Treuter” stamp and signature. Likely the same individual, though not confirmed.
