This is a beautiful antique heliogravure etching of "Dix-huit-cent quatorze" (translated: Eighteen Fourteen ), a famous Napoleonic scene by French academic painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815–1891) . This particular version was published by Héliogravure Braun, Clément & Cie , likely in the late 19th Century. The piece depicts Napoleon on horseback leading his troops through a bleak, wintry terrain , a scene reflective of Meissonier’s historical fascination with the Napoleonic wars. Lower left marked: "E. Meissonier Pinxt" (painter) Lower right publisher: "Hel. Braun, Clément & Cie" Title in elegant script: "Dix-huit-cent quatorze" Numbered in margin: “196” Date in lower right appears to read "1861" most likely the original date of the painting from Meissonier This is a stunning piece of historical art suitable for collectors of Napoleonic memorabilia, 19th-century military art, or French academic printmaking.
