The 1997 California 500 was the Inaugural NASCAR Winston Cup Series stock car race held at California Speedway in Fontana, California. Taking place on June 22, 1997, this event marked the 15th race of the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season and the return of NASCAR Winston Cup racing to Southern California.. Jeff Gordon of Hendrick Motorsports emerged victorious, leading the most laps with 113. Gordon’s strategic fuel management allowed him to secure his fifth victory of the season, crossing the finish line just ahead of teammate Terry Labonte. The race drew a crowd of 85,000, making it the first race in southern California since 1988 when Riverside International Raceway hosted the Budweiser 400. The track, known as Auto Club Speedway, was a 2-mile (3.2 km) four-turn superspeedway with banked turns and a banked front stretch.
