Pouteria ucuqui is a large evergreen tree with a heavy crown. The bole is unbranched for much of its length and has large buttresses at the base. The fruit is a favorite food of the local people and is avidly collected from the wild. The tree is usually left standing as a fruit crop when the forest is cleared for cultivation. The fruit has a delicious flavor when fully ripe. Eaten fresh, or mixed with cassava to produce a porridge.
