RARE!!!! U.S. Civil War Book The Privations of a Private by Marcus B. Toney 1905. The book was self published in 1905. In its 133 pages are several period engravings and images. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING: Among the many memoirs publishing following the U.S. Civil War, “The Privations of a Private” by Marcus B. Toney is among the raw and compelling recollections. The book was self published in 1905. Toney was an early volunteer for Confederate service from his home near Nashville, Tennessee. He served with the First Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the campaigns in West Virginia, at Shiloh, Chickamauga, and the Wilderness, where he was captured. In its 133 pages are several period engravings and images. Toney’s stance on slavery is tough to read, to say the least. Much of the interest and importance of this volume lie in Toney’s sober and detailed reporting of his experiences as a Federal POW, particularly his graphic descriptions and illustrations of alleged torture techniques used by Union soldiers. This copy has no marks. There is damage to two inside pages l, as well as the occasional dog eared page. The cover has some light soiling and wear. It measures 5 1/5” wide by 8” inches long.
