Description

What is it? Wooden candle sconce that I restored. It is meant to have a plate/disc behind the candle to reflect light back into the room, maximizing the efficiency of the candle. No maker's mark. Judging by the modern screw used to attach the candle fixture to the base, it appears more a "vintage style" rather than an actual 18th or 19th century antique. What's the story? Found at swap shop. It was dusty and superficially scratched up, but no major cracks or twists in the wood. Gentle cleaning and then some Restor-a-finish brought the wood to life. Candle sconces in museum collections I saw (Historic Deerfield, for example) appear to have tin or pewter, sometimes silver as the backing for the candle. Contemporary artists appear to prefer putting a mirror behind the candle. The candle sconce I found had nothing. I'm including the stainless steel plate and candle to provide you a complete set. You can replace the candle w/ a beeswax or tallow candle to achieve a more historically authentic look. The stainless steel can be replaced with tin/pewter/silver. Price? Decent quality item restored to good quality. Plate and candle thrown in make for complete set. This price is comparable to similar items posted online, but with my unique benefit of offering more than just the candle sconce.
