STUNNING Sterling Silver & Gold Cigarette Case Art Deco Hallmarked London C&C EX Description: Offered here is an elegant vintage Georgian Cohen & Charles of London sterling silver and gold cigarette case. The hallmarks date to 1938. Cohen & Charles were preeminent gold and silver makers in London, their combination of form and function were well renowned. This heavy vintage cigarette case is no exception. Rectangular in shape, the front of the sterling case is surrounded by an inset border of gold. The reverse is all sterling. It opens by a press-tab at the right. The gold-wash interior still retains the elastic cigarette holder device – cloth ‘stapled’ together. It has lost some of its elasticity. The interior is in excellent condition. The exterior shows some slight use, with two very slight impressions – one on the front, one on the reverse. The hallmarks are as follows. On the interior left are “C&C” in a rectangle, a lion passant, an uncrowned leopard’s head, and a “C,” impressed in squares. On the right side of the interior is a lion passant and an uncrowned leopard. From my interpretation of these marks is that the case is sterling silver, made by ‘C&C’ – the London smiths Cohen & Charles. The ‘C’ dates the case to 1938. There are no gold marks, but I suspect, given Cohen & Charles’ works, that the border on front is karat gold. When I first acquired the case, it was black with tarnish. I have carefully and delicately cleaned as much as I can, yet there is still work to do on the tarnish. It is a beautiful, stunning pieces of pre-war (WWII) design, and at the height of the Art Deco movement. It would be a prize in any tobacconists collection – as well as an excellent investment. Approximate Measurements: 5 inches tall by 3 -3/8 inches wide by 3/8 inch deep. Condition Report: Excellent condition with discrepancies noted above. The case snaps shut and is tight - there are no spaces between the two edges. The photos, scans and/or video are crucial elements of the description and are to be considered just as important as the description. I ask that you study them closely. The photos shown are of the actual item – some views have been taken with a flash camera. Review them carefully, as you may notice a flaw I missed. I cannot stress this enough: If you have any questions regarding the condition of an item, need additional photos, exacting measurements, or anything else, PLEASE message me! I will be happy to accommodate you. Be aware that most of the items I offer are antique or vintage – they may have been pre-owned and used. As a result, they could have flaws commensurate with age and use, and are sold as-is without the stand or other device (unless noted). Unless stated in the description or condition report, these may not be immediately noticeable. If you expect a new, pristine-condition item ― please think carefully before you bid. I must stress this as some bidders have expected immaculate items with no signs of previous use. If you are not accustomed to antique or vintage items, please ask questions before bidding.
