A monumental Meiji Satsuma koro with masterful samurai scenes and sculptural shishi finial. Description SIZE 24.4 inch Tall This large Satsuma (薩摩焼) incense burner (香炉) from the Meiji period (明治期) was carefully sourced in Japan. The body is richly decorated with detailed samurai (侍) scenes framed by dense gilt moriage and intricate geometric borders. The sculpted shishi (獅子) finial and three-legged form create a commanding architectural presence. The fine crackle glaze (貫入釉) and extensive gold (金彩) application are consistent with late nineteenth-century Satsuma export masterpieces. Impressive as a focal point in a formal interior or as a highlight within an advanced Satsuma collection.
