This volume contains the issues for November 1897 through April 1898. At the time, this women's magazine was rather high-brow - it gave fashion tips for the dinner party, and it also covered items of topical interest for informed conversation. For instance, there is coverage of a Mexican canal, India, the Japanese Imperial court, a fanciful account about what a war with Spain would be like, etc. In the U.S., H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds was originally serialized in The Cosmopolitan , and the last two installments are contained in this volume. The cover is very rough, and the hinges are badly cracked (see pics). The back cover is held by the cloth. As with all antiquarian books, it should really only be read if placed on a reading stand. However, the pages are in remarkably good condition, with little to no foxing, and only lightly tanned by age. There are many pictures and illustrations. The book is about 9⅜" by 6¾", and is 688 numbered pages in length.
