The Education of Abraham Cahan (1969 Hardcover w/ Dust Jacket / First Edition). Translated by Leon Stein, Abraham P. Conan and Lynn Davison from the Yiddish autobiography. THE EDUCATION OF ABRAHAM CAHAN Translated by LEON STEIN Foreword by LANNING B. CONN Yiddish readers know Abraham Cahan, author of The Rise of David Levinsky, as the founder and long-time editor of the Jewish Daily Forward, which served generations of Jewish immigrants and generated dozens of his mid-western, and after [sic] the publication of his two-volume autobiography, Bleter fun Mein Leben. Now The Education of Abraham Cahan makes the first part of his life available for the first time in English. It carries Cahan’s story of his life from birth in 1860 to the start of his literary and journalistic career in America in his thirtieth year. The story of these thirty years is filled with unique details and insights. Sketches of East European towns, in synagogues, in the Cahan family tavern are set down, as Cahan traces his drift away from orthodoxy, his education in a government training institute for Jewish teachers, his involvement with the nihilistic students, his imprisonment and eventual flight to America as a participant in the massive Jewish migration set off by the 1882 pogroms following the assassination of Czar Alexander II.The second half of the volume pictures the dramatics of American Jewish life in its rising tension and cohesion on the East Side of New York; his discovering of the social-political system, his crusading the Jewish trade-unionism; the Henry George campaigns of the nineties and his participation. Along these are sparkling vignettes of the Jewish figures of an earlier generation, Felix Adler and Michael Heilprin among them. Cahan’s autobiography is an invaluable record of a major period in Jewish history.
