General Description Yoshitomo Nara is an artist whose drawings of children with slightly cheeky expressions have earned him worldwide popularity across generations and cultures.This first complete collection of his entire work contains over 5,000 pieces created over a period of about 25 years, from 1984, when he first began his career, to 2010, divided into two volumes. Volume 1 covers about 800 paintings, as well as sculptures, ceramics, editions, and photography. Volume 2 contains about 3,800 drawings. All works are presented in chronological order, tracing the footsteps of Nara's surprisingly diverse and poetic practice. In addition to a detailed record of his activities, it also includes essays by Banana Yoshimoto, Takashi Murakami, Hiroshi Sugito, and Yoshitomo Nara himself, as well as an essay on the artist by Midori Matsui. [From this book] The six years between graduating from art school in Germany and returning to Japan were golden days for me, when I was able to have the most conversation with myself, and I used that in my work. Every day and every night, tirelessly, I fixed the images that welled up in my head on canvas. A boring building that was formerly a factory, covered with concrete, stands on the outskirts of Cologne. I sleep and work there. It is the center of my world. Late at night, when the surroundings are shrouded in darkness, the lights are brightly lit in my studio. The songs of poets continue to play from the speakers. As I faced the paintings in that studio, I felt like I was traveling alone on a spaceship. A small spaceship floating alone in the pitch blackness of space. I continued to paint while sometimes imagining such things. It seemed like my spaceship could fly forever, even to the edge of the universe.
