Description

Magic Lantern Slide c.1911 of pilot Calbraith P. Rodgers on a stop during his history making flight from NY to CA in 1911. The pilot is shown in profile, facing his plane. A crowd is shown in the background. Marked as American Press Association, New York City. The slide reads, "Calbraith P. Rodgers is the first flier to make a trip from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific slope. He flew 3220 miles in fifty days, leaving New York Sept. 17 and reaching Pasadena Cal. on Nov. 5. The picture taken during on of the stops in Rodgers' record breaking trip. He says the aerial 3000 mile journey will be made in thirty days." Wikipedia tells me that Rodgers took 90 minutes of flight training from Wilbur Wright and then bought a Wright flyer. Instead of flying straight home with his new plane, he joined an aviation meet in Chicago where he completed and set several records and earned over $11,000. A few months after his cross country flight he died during an exhibition flight in California when he flew through a flock of birds and crashed into the ocean. He was 33 when he died. For this slide, Image is overall good with some light scratching, etc. Edges covered with black paper have a couple of places of slight peeling. See photos as they are part of the description.
