Description
Description (Revised for Clarity) Authentic WWII Naval History – The "Shipmate Trade" Jumper This original WWII US Navy "Crackerjack" dress blue jumper features a fascinating piece of documented history. While the name "Sanders" is written in the collar, the garment is officially stamped with the laundry mark "HAS" and service number "341 01" belonging to Herman Junior Schmalz (1922–2011). The Story & Provenance: This item was sourced directly from the estate of Herman Junior Schmalz, an Aviation Radioman 2nd Class who served aboard the USS Currituck (AV-7) during the Philippines campaign. In the tight quarters of a wartime ship, gear was frequently traded or mixed up in the bulk laundry. Herman clearly "inherited" or traded for this jumper from his shipmate, Sanders, and marked it with his own official service stamp (HAS = Herman August Schmalz). Key Features: Rank: Original Aviation Radioman 2nd Class sleeve patch (Eagle over winged sparks). Identification: Stamped "341 01 HAS" (Herman’s unique Texas-based service number). Ship History: The USS Currituck was a seaplane tender that played a vital role in Pacific operations. Historical Connection: I am currently listing several other items from Herman Schmalz’s estate, including his primary uniform set and additional jumpers. Please check my other listings to see the complete collection. Condition Note: This jumper is in great structural shape for its age. There is one small hole on the back of the left arm (see photos). This is a common "moth nip" on 80-year-old wool and does not detract from its historical display value. The wool remains a deep, rich midnight blue.
