Description
Traditional Roof Tile "Maru ni Agari Fuji" (Wisteria Rising within a Circle). Description Shipping from JAPAN. This decorative tile is a work by Master Shoji Yoshii, a highly skilled onigawara artisan from Yoshii Onigawara. For over 60 years, Mr. Yoshii has devoted himself to the traditional techniques of onigawara —elaborately designed ornamental roof tiles that embody the artistry of Japan’s architectural heritage. His workshop is located in Kikuma Town, Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture—an area renowned for Kikuma Kawara , distinguished by their elegant forms and silvery ibushi (smoked) finish. At the Yoshii Onigawara Workshop, every step of the process—from shaping the original clay model to the final kiln firing—is meticulously carried out by Mr. Yoshii himself, with great attention to detail. In addition to creating new pieces, he also undertakes the restoration of aged or damaged tiles, faithfully reproducing not only the craftsmanship but even the subtle hand marks of the original artisans. Each piece reflects not only his exceptional craftsmanship but also a profound reverence for tradition. From his studio overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, Mr. Yoshii continues to create one-of-a-kind handmade works that embody the spirit of Japan’s architectural legacy. These rare and culturally significant tiles are now available to collectors, architects, and connoisseurs of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
