The Patch: This auction is for One WWII Original XVI Corps patch with a white back. This patch is in good condition. It has a very nice white backing. This patch does not glow under the UV light and is guaranteed to be authentic. The History: The XVI Corps was activated on November 23, 1943 at Fort Riley , Kansas . It participated in winter maneuvers in Michigan before embarking for Europe in September of 1944. It arrived at Omaha Beach and was given the mission of processing arriving troops and protecting France from invasion by 20,000 German troops isolated on the Channel Islands . The Corps kept its troop processing mission until January, 1945, but was assigned special missions during the Battle of the Bulge. They became part of the Ninth Army and were given positions along the Roer River . On February 23 rd , the XVI Corps crossed the Roer as part of Operation Grenade. The corps attacked north as the left flank of the Ninth Army and occupied Venlo , on the Maas River . They reached the Rhine on March 5 th and forced the surrender of Fort Bluecher . The XVI Corps then spearheaded the Ninth Army’s drive across Germany . They crossed the Rhine on March 24 th . The corps participated in the Ruhr Encirclement by driving south from Dortmund . On April 18 th , the XVI Corps was given military government duties in Westphalia . It was inactivated on December 7, 1945 and was then returned to the United States.
